Abstract

The increasing use of electronic payments (e-payments) among micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) has been accompanied by a surge in online financial fraud. This study aims to examine the influence of fraud awareness, digital financial literacy, and trust in e-payments on perceptions of online financial fraud. The theoretical frameworks used are the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The research approach is quantitative, employing an explanatory design and a cross-sectional study. Primary data were collected via a questionnaire from 202 MSME operators who use e-payments, selected through purposive sampling, and then analyzed using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) in SmartPLS 4. The results indicate that fraud awareness (β = 0.318; p < 0.001), digital financial literacy (β = 0.259; p < 0.001), and trust in e-payments (β = 0.182; p = 0.002) have a positive effect on perceptions of online financial fraud. These three variables explain 26.9% of the variation in perceptions of fraud (R² = 0.269) with a small effect size. These findings underscore the importance of raising fraud awareness and digital financial literacy among MSME operators, as well as strengthening the security and transparency of services provided by e-payment providers.
