Abstract

Catfish aquaculture in tarpaulin ponds is a growing freshwater fishery sector in Indonesia, yet it faces serious challenges: high fish mortality due to irregular water quality monitoring and inconsistent feeding. This study designs an IoT-based water quality monitoring and automatic feeding system using the Hardware Development Life Cycle (HDLC) method with a prototype approach. The system uses an ESP32 microcontroller connected to a pH 4502C sensor, DS18B20 temperature sensor, HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor, DS3231 RTC module, and SG90 servo motor. Sensor data is transmitted to Firebase Realtime Database and displayed via a real-time web monitoring dashboard with data export to Excel/PDF and automated Telegram Bot notifications. Testing results show the pH 4502C sensor achieved 95.51% accuracy within the ideal catfish cultivation range (pH 6.82–7.38). The DS18B20 temperature sensor recorded 26.70°C–26.77°C in the morning and 34.00°C–34.82°C at noon with high consistency. The automatic feeding system achieved a 100% success rate in 30 trials. Average data transmission delay was 1.5 seconds with 0% packet loss. All 30 Blackbox Testing scenarios were validated. Questionnaire evaluation by three fish farmers yielded a 'Very Feasible' category with a mean score of 94.7%, including automation effectiveness of 93.3% and time efficiency of 96.0%. Keywords: IoT, ESP32, Water Quality Monitoring, Automatic Feeding, Firebase Realtime Database.
