Abstract
Financial stress is a situation where an individual is unable to manage money effectively to fulfil their financial obligations, and live the life they wants. The purpose of this article is to examine the effect of saving orientation and materialism on financial stress by using spending self-control as a mediating variable.The number of respondents from this study were 300 respondents from the City of Surabaya, Sidoarjo Regency, Mojokerto Regency and Gresik Regency with a minimum monthly total family income of IDR 4,000,000. Respondents were selected by purposive sampling and analysis technique used is Partial Least Square Equation Modelling using the Smart PLS 3.0 program. The results show that saving orientation role in predicting financial stress is negative nonsignificant, materialism has a significant positive effect on financial stress and spending self-control mediates the effect of materialism on financial stress.
