Abstract

The development of Rural Banks (BPR) in supporting the post-pandemic micro-business sector faces challenges in maintaining profitability, particularly concerning operational expenses and credit risks, which are also primary concerns for BPRs in Sidoarjo Regency. This study aims to analyze the effect of capital adequacy ratio (CAR), non-performing loans (NPL), loan-to-deposit ratio (LDR), and operational efficiency (BOPO) on profitability (ROA). A quantitative approach was employed using a purposive sampling technique involving 30 BPRs over the 2020–2025 period, yielding 180 panel data observations. Data analysis was conducted using the Fixed Effect Model processed with EViews software. The results indicate that CAR has a positive and significant effect on ROA, whereas BOPO exerts a dominant negative and significant effect. Meanwhile, NPL and LDR have no significant partial effect on ROA. Simultaneously, CAR, NPL, LDR, and BOPO significantly affect ROA, with an Adjusted R-squared value of 87.13%. The findings imply that controlling operational expenses and strengthening capital structures are essential aspects of sustaining BPR profitability.
