Abstract

Profitability is a key indicator of performance and long-term sustainability in the banking industry. This study analyzes the effects of financing risk (Non-Performing Financing/NPF), liquidity (Financing to Deposit Ratio/FDR), and bank size (Size) on the profitability of Islamic banks in Indonesia measured by Return on Assets (ROA), while also examining the moderating role of inflation. The study employs quarterly panel data from 11 Islamic Commercial Banks (Bank Umum Syariah/BUS) during the 2021–2024 period, resulting in 175 valid observations. Multiple linear regression analysis was applied using two models: without moderation and with inflation as a moderating variable. The results show that NPF has a significant negative effect, while FDR has a significant positive effect on profitability. Bank size has a positive but insignificant effect, indicating that the level of assets does not necessarily increase ROA. Inflation also does not significantly moderate the relationship between NPF, FDR, and profitability, suggesting that their effects remain consistent despite macroeconomic fluctuations. Simultaneously, NPF, FDR, and Size significantly affect ROA, with R² values of 0.231 without moderation and 0.237 with moderation. These findings highlight that effective financing risk management and optimal liquidity management are key internal determinants of profitability in Islamic banks.
