Abstract
This study aims to examine the effect of meaningfulness of work on contextual performance and adaptive performance, with employee engagement and innovative work behavior as mediating variables among Generation Z employees in East Java. Generation Z employees tend to emphasize meaningful work, personal values, and adaptability in facing dynamic work environments, making meaningfulness of work an important factor in improving employee performance. This research employed a quantitative approach using a survey method. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to Generation Z employees in East Java and analyzed using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The variables examined in this study included meaningfulness of work, employee engagement, innovative work behavior, contextual performance, and adaptive performance.the results indicate that meaningfulness of work has a positive and significant effect on employee engagement. Furthermore, employee engagement has a positive and significant effect on innovative work behavior. The findings also show that employee engagement and innovative work behavior mediate the effect of meaningfulness of work on contextual performance and adaptive performance. In addition, meaningfulness of work directly has a positive and significant effect on contextual performance and adaptive performance among Generation Z employees in East Java. These findings imply that organizations need to create meaningful work environments to enhance employee engagement, encourage innovative behavior, and improve contextual and adaptive performance.
