Abstract
The design of a children's illustrated book about R.A. Kartini using the scratch and sniff technique based on an olfactory neuropsychological approach aims to present an innovative alternative learning medium for elementary school students. This design is motivated by the declining interest in reading physical books and the limited availability of engaging educational media, resulting in children's limited and symbolic understanding of R.A. Kartini’s figure and her values of struggle. Therefore, a new approach that is more interactive and involves multisensory experience is needed. The design method includes data collection through literature study, observation, and target audience analysis, followed by the development of story concepts, illustration design, and the integration of scratch and sniff technology as an olfactory element. The result of this design is an interactive illustrated storybook that allows readers not only to read and see but also to experience the story through the sense of smell. The use of scents that correspond to the story context serves to strengthen the atmosphere and help children understand and remember the story more effectively. Thus, this book has the potential to become an engaging, interactive, and effective learning medium in improving children's reading interest and understanding of historical values.
