Abstract
The purpose of this study was to obtain empirical evidence whether the company doing earnings management before and after the merger or acquisition. In addition it aims to determine changes in the company's financial performance before and after the merger or acquisition.Earnings management by the company for discretionary accruals (DA) is the proxy,then to measure company performance measured by financial ratio include the ratio of activity (total asset turnover), liquidity ratio (cash ratio), the solvency ratio (dept to equity ratio), the ratio of the probability (net profit margin and return on assets).The sample of this study are 32 companies doing mergers or acquisitions that are listed in the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) 2006-2009. Analysis in this study performed using paired samples t-test. The results show that there is an indication of earnings management around mergers or acquisitions but there are no differences in earnings management before and after the merger or acquisition. Furthermore, the company's financial performance as measured by cash ratio, dept-to-equity ratio, return on assets, net profit margin and total asset turnover showed no that there are significant difference before and after merger or acquisition.
