Abstract

We investigate the impact of being politically connected on bank performance and cost of funding of national bank foreign exchange. We study 28 of national bank foreign exchange over the 2014-2017 period disentangled into politically connected banks which can be state-owned banks and private banks as well as non-politically connected banks. The results of the study show that politically connected banks have a significant effect on bank performance which means that politically connected banks can improve performance comparing non-politically connected banks, especially at state-owned banks. Political connections have a significant negative effect on cost of funding which means that politically connected banks have lower funding costs than banks that are not politically connected. The implication of the research is that political connections bank advantage than non political connections bank. Keywords: Political Connections; Performance; Cost of Funding
