Abstract

This study investigates the determinants of profitability among conventional Regional Development Banks (RDBs) in Indonesia by examining the influence of credit risk, lending, operational inefficiency, capitalization, inflation, the policy interest rate, and economic growth. Profitability is assessed using two indicators, namely Return on Assets (ROA) and Net Interest Margin (NIM), to identify differences in the factors influencing overall asset returns and banking intermediation margins. The study employs a quantitative approach using balanced panel data from 23 conventional RDBs during 2018–2024, comprising 161 bank-year observations. Data are analyzed using the Random Effects Model (REM). The findings reveal that lending positively affects both ROA and NIM, whereas operational inefficiency and capitalization negatively influence both indicators. Credit risk and inflation exhibit no statistically significant effects on either profitability measure. Furthermore, the policy interest rate positively influences ROA but has no significant effect on NIM. Conversely, economic growth negatively affects ROA without significantly influencing NIM. These findings demonstrate that banking profitability determinants may operate differently across performance indicators. Therefore, RDBs should strengthen productive lending, improve operational efficiency, and optimize capital utilization while maintaining liquidity, credit quality, and capital adequacy. Regulators should incorporate both ROA and NIM into comprehensive profitability assessments.
