Abstract
Credit risk management is essential for maintaining banking stability and financial sustainability, particularly for Regional Development Banks (Bank Pembangunan Daerah, BPDs), which play a strategic role in supporting regional economic development in Indonesia. This study aims to examine the effects of credit growth, capital adequacy, and profitability on credit risk, considering the moderating role of female commissioners. A quantitative research design was employed using secondary panel data from 23 conventional Regional Development Banks over the 2018–2024 period, resulting in 161 bank-year observations. The data were analyzed using panel regression analysis, with the Random Effects Model (REM) selected based on panel model specification tests. Drawing on Agency Theory and Resource Dependence Theory, this study explores how financial characteristics and corporate governance mechanisms relate to credit risk in the banking sector. The empirical results reveal that credit growth and profitability have negative and statistically significant effects on credit risk. These findings suggest that well-managed credit expansion and stronger earnings performance are associated with lower credit risk exposure. Meanwhile, capital adequacy exhibits a positive but statistically insignificant effect on credit risk. The results further indicate that female commissioners have no significant direct effect on credit risk and do not significantly moderate the relationships between credit growth, capital adequacy, profitability, and credit risk. Overall, the regression model is statistically significant and explains 17.06% of the variation in credit risk. This study contributes to the literature on banking risk management and corporate governance by providing empirical evidence of the limited moderating role of female board commissioners in the relationship between financial characteristics and credit risk among Indonesian Regional Development Banks. Keywords: Credit Growth, Capital Adequacy, Profitability, Credit Risk, Female Commissioners.
