Abstract
In a country, banks serve as a tool for maintaining monetary and economic stability, assisting the government in regulating and maintaining the stability of the domestic currency, and expanding employment opportunities to improve the standard of living. The presence of banking financial institutions in Timor-Leste, including foreign banks operating in Timor-Leste, such as Banco Nacional Do Comercio De Timor Leste (BNCTL), Bank ANZ (Australia and New Zealand Bank), and Bank BNU (Banco Nacional Ultramarino), plays a crucial role in developing the community's economy and building state assets to improve the standard of living of the community and the nation. Banking profitability in Timor-Leste, as measured by ROA and NIM, indicates differences in profitability. The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of credit, third-party funds, capital, and bank size on the profitability of banks operating in Timor-Leste. This study uses a quantitative approach because the data used are figures obtained from bank financial reports. This approach aims to objectively examine the relationship between the independent and dependent variables using statistical analysis. The type of research used is causal research (explanatory research), namely research that aims to explain the causal relationship between independent variables consisting of credit, third party funds, capital, and bank size against the dependent variable, namely bank profitability. Based on the t-test results, credit (LAR) has a t-statistic of 1.3536, lower than the t- table value (±2.145), indicating that LAR's effect on profitability is insignificant. Therefore, the hypothesis stating that credit affects profitability is rejected. This finding indicates that the proportion of credit to assets is not yet a primary determinant of bank profit performance in Timor Leste. The third-party funds (DEPTA) variable shows a t-statistic of 3.1665, greater than the one-way t-table value (1.761), indicating that DEPTA has a positive and significant effect on profitability. Therefore, the hypothesis stating that third-party funds have a positive effect on profitability is accepted. This finding confirms the important role of public funds as a primary funding source in supporting bank intermediation performance and increasing bank profits. Furthermore, capital (ETA) has a t-statistic of 3.6964, which is greater than the t-table value (±2.145), indicating that capital has a positive and significant effect on profitability. Thus, the hypothesis of the effect of capital on profitability is accepted. This indicates that banks with a strong capital structure tend to have a better ability to generate profits from assets under management. Meanwhile, bank size (UB) shows a t-statistic value of 2.0339, which is still smaller than the t-table value (±2.145), indicating that the effect of bank size on profitability is insignificant. Therefore, the hypothesis of the effect of bank size on profitability is rejected. This finding indicates that differences in asset scale between banks in Timor-Leste are not yet a determining factor in differences in profitability performance.
