Abstract
This study examines the influence of peers, social media, and financial attitude on the financial behavior of Generation Z university students in Surabaya, with social media and financial attitude serving as mediating variables. Using a quantitative explanatory approach with a cross-sectional design, primary data were collected through an online questionnaire from 171 Generation Z students selected using purposive sampling. Data analysis was conducted using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (SEM-PLS) with the WarpPLS application. The results indicate that peers have a positive and significant effect on students’ financial behavior, while social media does not have a significant direct effect. Financial attitude is found to have a positive and significant influence on financial behavior. Furthermore, social media does not mediate the relationship between peers and financial behavior. However, financial attitude fully mediates the influence of social media on financial behavior, suggesting that the impact of social media is channeled through internal cognitive evaluations rather than direct behavioral changes. These findings highlight the dominant role of internal factors, particularly financial attitude, in shaping financial behavior among Generation Z students. The study contributes to the development of behavioral finance literature by clarifying the mechanism through which social and digital factors affect financial behavior. Practically, the results emphasize the importance of strengthening positive financial attitudes through financial education initiatives to improve students’ financial behavior.
