Abstract
Consumptive behavior refers to an individual's tendency to purchase goods or services excessively, which is often not based on actual needs but is influenced by desires, lifestyle, and environmental factors. This phenomenon is increasingly common among university students along with the development of digital technology, the ease of transactions, and exposure to information through social media. This study aims to analyze the influence of financial literacy, social media, and e-money on students’ consumptive behavior with self-control as a mediating variable. This study used a quantitative approach with data collection conducted through questionnaires. The population of this research consisted of university students studying at higher education institutions in Surabaya, totaling 366,930 students from 33 universities. The sample size was determined using the Slovin formula with a 7% margin of error. Out of 350 questionnaires collected, 334 respondents met the research criteria and were analyzed using the Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) method. The results show that financial literacy has a negative effect on students’ consumptive behavior. Social media has a positive effect on consumptive behavior, while e-money does not have a significant effect on consumptive behavior. In addition, self-control has a negative effect on consumptive behavior and is able to mediate the relationship between financial literacy and consumptive behavior. These findings indicate that self-control plays an important role in controlling students' consumptive behavior.
