Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of Non-Performing Financing (NPF), Financing to Deposit Ratio (FDR), bank size (Size), and Operating Expenses to Operating Income (BOPO) on the profitability of Islamic banks in Indonesia, measured by Return on Assets (ROA), and to examine the role of foreign ownership as a moderating variable. The sample consists of 9 Islamic Commercial Banks that met the selection criteria, using quarterly data from 2020 to 2024 with a total of 180 observations. Secondary data were obtained from the official publications of the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and the banks’ financial reports. The results reveal that NPF has a negative and significant effect on ROA, FDR has a positive and significant effect, Size has a negative and significant effect, and BOPO shows a strongly negative and significant effect on profitability. Furthermore, foreign ownership strengthens the negative impact of BOPO on ROA, indicating that cost inefficiency has a greater effect on Islamic banks with foreign ownership. These findings highlight that effective risk management, optimal utilization of third-party funds, and operational efficiency are essential strategies to enhance profitability and competitiveness of Islamic banks in Indonesia. Keywords: Profitability, Islamic Banks, Non-Performing Financing (NPF), Financing to Deposit Ratio (FDR), Size, BOPO, Foreign Ownership, ROA
